Don't let the stupid font on the sign deter you, as it almost did me. The Avenue grill is the hometown diner you would expect in Nebraska city - along with Johnny's, is a great place for breakfast or lunch! I had my usual vice - chicken fried steak, and was not disappointed! Coffee was weak and kept on coming. The service was great and friendly, but not overattentive as some places can be. I'm not sure if i prefer this over Johnny's or not. Both are great small town cafes... How does one town get to be so lucky!? I would put my money on The Avenue as far as quality and service goes... but I prefer the atmosphere of Johnny's... It's a toss up, but I think you won't be disappointed if you stop here some morning for a bite. Hint - Order a cinnamon roll to split as an appetizer. They are great!

The food is good. My wife and I use it as a fun day trip out to Nebraska City. The service is not memorable but that is better than poor. If you get a chance its worth a stop for some old truck stop style food.

Stopped in after visiting the local orchards. I had the Monte Cristo sandwich. All and all the visit and meal were very good. The only disappointment was lack of a filling in my sandwich. I'm used to doctored menu photos but this was a bit extreme. I think they used a single slice of Canadian bacon and single slice of cheese for two Texas toast slices of bread. But the sauce was very good and made up for the lack of sandwich meat. A bit pricey for basically french toast but it was good.

Very nice establishment that at first sight is pretty plan looking. Took a while to be seated (only one couple in front of us) but the wait was worth it. Food was really good and portions were nice sized.

The inside decor of this restaurant makes absolutely no sense. It's as if a yard sale exploded inside with random shit landing everywhere and they decided to serve food - I kid you not. But weird furnishings aside, it was charming and offered a wide variety of food options. If you're in town, it's probably one of your better bets. Oh, and watch out for the dragon that lives in the basement....

Boy, I am glad I took a chance on Nebraska City dining. I've got to admit, I didn't have high hopes for the town when I exited the freeway and proceeded driving through the small, but very adorable town on the way to its downtown. Once I had decided on the The Avenue Grill and eventually took a look at the menu, I became a little more optimistic. They offer a wide variety of plates, many of which feature an interesting twist on a classic dish. It took me quite a while to decide on something because there simply wasn't much that didn't look good. I settled on an open-faced meatloaf sandwich with BBQ gravy and onion rings (as an extra side). They jar and sell their own BBQ sauce on the side, so I was eager to try it out. My sandwich was spectacular, and I am awfully picky about my meatloaf. But this stuff was rich and dense and not comprised primarily of bread crumbs and salt. The mashed potatoes were, brace yourself, made from real potatoes and not from some kind of boxed dust. The BBQ gravy, which I believe comes on a few different dishes, was excellent, just the right amount of tang to bring out the flavor of the meatloaf. Fantastic stuff. I had the opportunity to try the fried chicken tenders and french fries as well. Both were very good, though they were without frills. The homemade BBQ was a bit too sweet to me, but it did have a lot of flavor to it and was a nice compliment to the saltier foods. Service here was very capable and quick, as I was never in want of a refill nor did I have to search for someone when I wanted the check. In short, I won't be nearly so hesitant to depart from the freeway next time I am traveling that way. That little pit-stop was certainly worth a little extra driving.
